Application of Centrifuges in the Chemical Industry: Specific Sectors

In simple terms, a centrifuge is a critical separation device in the chemical industry that utilizes centrifugal force for the rapid and efficient separation of liquid-solid or liquid-liquid-solid mixtures. In chemical production, this typically means separating the product from by-products, catalysts, or impurities.

Below is a detailed explanation of centrifuge applications in specific chemical industry sectors:

1. Fertilizer Industry

This is one of the most extensive application areas for centrifuges.

  • Urea Production: Used to separate urea crystals from the mother liquor after synthesis. Horizontal Pusher Centrifuges are typically employed to obtain dry urea granules.
  • Ammonium Sulfate/Ammonium Nitrate Production: Similarly used for solid-liquid separation after crystallization to obtain the final fertilizer product.
  • Phosphoric Acid/Phosphate Fertilizer Production: Used in the wet-process phosphoric acid method to separate phosphogypsum from phosphoric acid.

2. Pesticide/Agrochemical Industry

  • Intermediate and Active Ingredient Synthesis: During the production of pesticide active ingredients, many reactions produce solid crystals or particles. Centrifuges are used for:
    • Catalyst Separation: Recovering expensive catalysts (e.g., palladium on carbon) for reuse.
    • Product Purification: Separating synthesized active ingredient crystals from the reaction mother liquor and washing them to remove impurities.
    • Common types: Three-Column (Suspended) Centrifuges (for batch production) or Plate-Type Centrifuges.

3. Petrochemical and Coal Chemical Industries

  • Catalyst Recovery: After polymerization reactions (e.g., polyethylene, polypropylene) or other catalytic reactions, the reaction slurry contains solid catalyst particles. Decanter Centrifuges are widely used for the continuous, efficient separation and recovery of these catalysts.
  • Product Purification: Used to separate water and solid impurities from products like lubricating oils and diesel.
  • Coal Chemical Industry: Used in processes like coal-to-liquids and coal-to-gas to separate coal powder, catalysts, and process water. For example, Decanter Centrifuges are used for slag-water separation in black water treatment after coal gasification.

4. Inorganic Acids and Alkalis Industry

  • Soda Ash (Sodium Carbonate) Industry: Used for separating heavy soda (sodium bicarbonate) crystals.
  • Chlor-Alkali Industry: Used in the brine purification step to remove precipitates like magnesium hydroxide and calcium carbonate from brine.
  • Titanium Dioxide Production: A classic application. In the sulfate process, centrifuges are used multiple times to separate metatitanic acid after hydrolysis, various intermediate products before calcination, and for water washing. Horizontal Peeler Centrifuges are commonly used.

5. Organic Chemical and Fine Chemical Industries

  • Dyes and Pigments: Similar to titanium dioxide production, used for separating dye and pigment particles to ensure product particle size and purity.
  • Pharmaceutical Intermediates: The synthesis of many pharmaceutical intermediates involves crystallization steps. Centrifuges are key equipment for achieving high-purity separation. Requirements for material of construction (e.g., 316L stainless steel, Hastelloy) and containment are high.
  • Plastics and Resins: For example, used in PVC (polyvinyl chloride) production to separate PVC resin particles from the slurry.

6. Environmental Protection and Waste Treatment

Although not directly producing chemical products, this is an essential part of chemical plants.

  • Wastewater Treatment: Using Decanter Centrifuges or Disc Stack Separators to dewater sludge from chemical wastewater, reducing sludge volume for subsequent treatment or disposal.
  • Waste Solid Treatment: Dewatering hazardous solid waste generated during production to reduce volume.

Main Functions and Advantages of Centrifuges in Chemical Applications

  1. Continuous Production: Centrifuges like decanters can operate 24/7, meeting the needs of large-scale, continuous modern chemical production.
  2. High Efficiency and Purity: Centrifugal force is much greater than gravity, leading to fast and effective separation. In chemical production, this translates to higher product yield and purity.
  3. High Degree of Automation: Modern centrifuges can be integrated with DCS (Distributed Control Systems) for fully automatic operation, reducing manual intervention and ensuring consistent product quality.
  4. Energy Saving and Reduced Consumption: Effectively recover valuable materials (e.g., catalysts, solvents), lowering production costs.
  5. Strong Adaptability: Can be tailored to handle various corrosive, flammable, and explosive chemical materials by selecting different types (disc stack, decanter, peeler, pusher, etc.) and materials of construction (metals, rubber linings, etc.).

Common Types of Centrifuges Used

  • Decanter Centrifuge (Horizontal Screw Centrifuge): Suitable for continuous processing of large flows with low solid content, such as sludge dewatering and catalyst recovery.
  • Disc Stack Separator: Suitable for liquid-liquid separation or solid-liquid separation involving very fine particles, such as oil purification and emulsion separation.
  • Horizontal Peeler Centrifuge: Suitable for batch separation of crystalline materials with medium to high concentration and larger particles, common in pharmaceuticals and dyes.
  • Pusher Centrifuge: Suitable for continuous separation of crystalline materials with high concentration and coarse particles, such as urea and salts.

In summary, the centrifuge is the "separation heart" of the chemical industry. Its efficient separation function is indispensable from basic bulk chemicals (like fertilizers, acids, alkalis) to high-value-added fine chemicals (like pharmaceuticals, pesticides), directly impacting product quality, cost, and environmental compliance.
